Which Day is the Sabbath?

Author : Tom Rainwater

QUESTION: My husband recently told me that he read that the Sabbath is actually Saturday and not Sunday. We all know that churches traditionally hold services on Sunday. Is this biblically correct?

ANSWER: Hello! Thanks for your question.

The Sabbath day observance was part of the Law of Moses given to the Israelites. (Exodus 20:8-11; 32:12-18; 35:1-3; Leviticus 23:3; Numbers 28:9-10; Deuteronomy 5:12-15). The Sabbath day was the seventh day of the week. Only Israelites were required to observe the Sabbath day and follow all its regulations.

Nobody today is required to observe the Sabbath since the Law of Moses is no longer in effect. The binding nature of Moses’ old covenant was removed by Christ’s death. He took it out of the way having “nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14-17). When Christ died and rose from the dead, there was no longer a need for the Law of Moses (Galatians 3:19-29). We are under the new covenant of Christ today (Hebrews 8:7-13), made effective by the shedding of his blood (Luke 22:20; Hebrews 12:24). Christians today who abondon Christ’s Law to try to follow the rules and regulations of Moses’ Law are “fallen from grace” (Galatians 5:1-6; 2:16).

So since the Law of Moses was done away in Christ’s death, on which day then did the early Christians worship and partake of the Lord’s supper? They worshiped on the first day of the week as instructed by the apostles (Acts 20:7; 1Corinthians 16:2), which was the same day of the week Christ rose from the dead (Mark 16:2,9; Matthew 28:1; Luke 24:1; John 20:1).
