Throne of God
Keith Sharp

This question was submitted to me: “Does God have a throne?”

Yes, of course God has a throne (1 Kings 22:19; Psalm 47:8; Isaiah 6:1). The word “throne,” when used literally, denotes a physical “seat” (Mounce. 1170; cf. 1 Kings 10:18-19). However, the same word is used figuratively to mean “power, dominion” (Mounce. Ibid). Is God’s throne literal and physical or figurative and spiritual? Is it a physical seat, or is it His power and dominion (rule)?

God is a spirit (John 4:24). A spirit does not have a physical body (Luke 24:39). Does a spirit sit on a physical chair?

Heaven is God’s throne, and the earth is His footstool (Isaiah 66:1; Acts 7:49). Solomon sat on the throne of God (1 Chronicles 29:23). Did Solomon sit on heaven with his feet on the earth?

But the Lord’s throne is in heaven (Psalm 11:4; Psalm 103:19). If God’s throne is a literal, physical seat, is heaven God’s throne, or is His throne in heaven?

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of” the Lord’s throne (Psalm 89:14; Psalm 97:2). Is a physical chair built on”righteousness and justice”?

The Lord said His throne is in Jerusalem in the Temple (Ezekiel 43:6-7). That Temple was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. Did Nebuchadnezzar destroy the throne of God?

The throne of God is a fiery flame with wheels (Daniel 7:9). Is heaven (the throne of God) a fiery flame with wheels?

Now, you tell me, is the throne of God a physical seat or is it His rule?
